Manatsu Natsuumi is a first-year junior high school student born and raised on a small island. William Conrad guest starred as Frank Cannon of Cannon on the first episode of Barnaby Jones, "Requiem for a Son" and the two series had a two-part crossover episode in 1975, "The Deadly Conspiracy".

The creators of 8th & Ocean are also responsible for Laguna Beach, a show also airing on MTV. The theme song for the show is "Beautiful Love" by the Christian rock band The Afters.
